Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg plans to build Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Posted on January 22, 2016

Mr Zuckerberg said he would start to build the AI with technology that is already out there  “What I’m sure I did not do is come up with a plan for a personal robot assistant.” He said Apparently this “simple” AI will do everything from controlling the heat and lighting in his home via voice commands to acting as a kind of supercharged baby monitor for his daughter Maxima.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the intelligence exhibited by machines or software. It is also the name of the academic field of study which studies how to create computers and computer software that are capable of intelligent behavior. Major AI researchers and textbooks define this field as “the study and design of intelligent agents”, in which an intelligent agent is a system that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chances of success. John McCarthy, who coined the term in 1955, defines it as “the science and engineering of making intelligent machines”.

For Facebook, he added that the system would help him visualize data in virtual reality and help him build better services, as well as lead his company. His announcement comes as Facebook is in the midst of AI initiatives such as building an assistant through its Messenger app for users. He is telling the world that Facebook’s investment in artificial intelligence – already pretty substantial – is not some side project but of core importance to the company’s mission.

He has looked at what Apple is doing with Siri, Google with Google Now, and Microsoft with Cortana and has decided that these still-crude personal digital assistants could actually be the next big thing in technology.Maybe he has also played with the Amazon Echo, an intelligent speaker that learns your voice and responds to all sorts of queries and commands.

The tech billionaire said a part of the motivation behind this year’s challenge was the reward of building things yourself.
